This is a video demonstrating the main drum beats & fills of the studio recording of Led Zeppelin’s STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN from the fourth studio album.
*Toward the end of the video (at 24:32) there is a explanation of one of Bonham’s coolest drum fills ever, from the live version of STAIRWAY found on the soundtrack THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. That fill occurs just before Page’s solo.

Please see my other videos for 100 other Led Zeppelin John Bonham drum videos.

Terry my friend, I finally posted the video on the drum lick before the
guitar solo in Stairway, it should be at the top of my vids. I thought
you’d appreciate it. Thank you and keep rockin’!!

ruben79670 says:

Can you explain the fill he does in the TSRTS live version of stairway
around 5:40.. when plant sings : Your head is humming and it won’t go, in
case you don’t know.. It’s such a cool fill..

poekoelan75 says:

I agree with you about that under rated fill in the live Stairway. It’s so
cool because of the tension it creates there. And the crashes aren’t on the
beat. I haven’t tried to count it out, but they are either on an off beat
8th note or an off beat 16th note”. He has put crashes in odd places in
other songs too. I think it’s one of his under rated ( and often
misunderstood ) techniques Most drummers ( me included ) are so used to
putting crashes on one that we don’t even think about using them anywhere
else. Couple that with the way he played in between straight time and swing
time and you have something really unique sounding. Keep the vids coming! I
always seem to pick a little something up from you even if it is from a
song I already know.

Joe Nocella says:

You’re right about the second bass drum note during the 4 herta fill.
People think there’s a ll kinds of stuff going on but it is exactly as you
showed.

babble all over the place!

MrRockandRollx says:

Great video! I love the fill in TSRTS in the end where Bonham speeds up the
two 16th note snare rolls; I’m terrible at trying to explain things I know
but its the fill right after all of the singing but before Plant says, ”
and shes buying a stairway to heaven.” Btw I meant to ask you, in your
“death video” the title wouldn’t happen to have been In My Time of Dying by
sheer accident would it? lol

bonzoleum says:

Thank God! I was worried there for a minute..

bonzoleum says:

Thanks for the nice words-Happy Holidays!!

osterkenn says:

….this is such a great channel, not just informative but your personality
makes the lessons even more enjoyable. You make me break out the old 2002
every time I watch one of your vids. So glad I found your channel. Happy
Holidays!

dcwest3 says:

I hear Bonham playing either triplets or doubles on the hi hat throughout
the song, anybody else notice that?

JR Alliso says:

What brand and size sticks do you use? You should do a video on the kind of
sticks Bonham used. “NO” body has a video like that out like that, or
nobody seems to know. Peace

MrRockandRollx says:

YES! That part!

bonzoleum says:

Thanks! I haven’t done a Bonzo’s Montreux yet-I suppose I should!

DAVIS 4 WHEEL DRIVE says:

Thank you for explaining the fill from TSRTS, cuz that always threw me off
when trying to play it lol

resilvina says:

Thanks for this lesson!! I’ve been playing the drums for less than two
years and I have to play this song in a couple of weeks, so this video is
really helpful! (Anyway, I’ll play a much simpler version) Greetings from
Argentina 🙂

Michael Tingle says:
