This is a video demonstrating the main drum beats & fills of the studio recording of Led Zeppelin’s STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN from the fourth studio album.
*Toward the end of the video (at 24:32) there is a explanation of one of Bonham’s coolest drum fills ever, from the live version of STAIRWAY found on the soundtrack THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME. That fill occurs just before Page’s solo.
Please see my other videos for 100 other Led Zeppelin John Bonham drum videos.
Terry my friend, I finally posted the video on the drum lick before the
guitar solo in Stairway, it should be at the top of my vids. I thought
you’d appreciate it. Thank you and keep rockin’!!
I love this, dude your ghost notes are INCREDIBLE.
A lot of this is incorrect.
dud, love your vids.i know id get along with you great. thanks for all the
help
GHOST NOTES
Can you explain the fill he does in the TSRTS live version of stairway
around 5:40.. when plant sings : Your head is humming and it won’t go, in
case you don’t know.. It’s such a cool fill..
I agree with you about that under rated fill in the live Stairway. It’s so
cool because of the tension it creates there. And the crashes aren’t on the
beat. I haven’t tried to count it out, but they are either on an off beat
8th note or an off beat 16th note”. He has put crashes in odd places in
other songs too. I think it’s one of his under rated ( and often
misunderstood ) techniques Most drummers ( me included ) are so used to
putting crashes on one that we don’t even think about using them anywhere
else. Couple that with the way he played in between straight time and swing
time and you have something really unique sounding. Keep the vids coming! I
always seem to pick a little something up from you even if it is from a
song I already know.
You’re right about the second bass drum note during the 4 herta fill.
People think there’s a ll kinds of stuff going on but it is exactly as you
showed.
Very good.~~!
Fuck you bitch
13:03 the man is possessed!!!
Great, nice singing too (4:40)
I have the sheet music for the studio version and it’s actually way more
complitcated with the hihat foot than you think. Just thought i would let
you all know.
You’re scary great. Thanks.

I’m getting anew camera shortly that will have a better mic and an input
for a lavalier. In the past few videos I actually did try to hold off on my
talking for a few seconds, but I get ahead of myself and want to just
babble all over the place!
Hey Terry, kinda off topic, but are there any footage on youtube that
features you with your past Zep tribute band?
Hey getting some good fills .in my fiftys now played all the zep stuff
growing up, my favorite drummer of all time .although I play mostly
originals now I play with johns feel thanks for the info .I enjoy you
videos very helpful good since of humor also keep them coming
You need to listen to the song more carefully. The first beat is completely
wrong >:(
Really helpful video, have wanted a detailed breakdown of this drum part
for a long time. Thanks for sharing, and explaining in an accessible way,
is ther a special way to prevent the wallet’s creeping movement? Thanks!Good
job Man!
awesome, i believe you played that intro fill the right way the first time,
thats the way its written in the “Drum Technique Of Led Zeppelin” book.
also, have you done a video of Bonzo’s Montreux yet?
wallet muffling, genius !!
excellent………..( french )
How I learned was was D’yer M’aker but the bass drum peddle twice
Try Jammin Sams for the wrap!
That snare sounds awesome with that wallet on.
What is that on your snare? Just curious cuz i wanna get that if it makes
it sound better haha
dude you are the man
Exactly!
Man! i’ve been trying to get that fill down for a while now. I really like
your explanation bonzoleum. love your videos keep em up!
Hey Terry, take a look this video here in You Tube: ‘The way to understand
“Rhythm Trick part of Stairway To Heaven” easily.’ from Larzgallows Sounds
right? Make sense to me! Thanks again!!
Am I the only one who thinks bonzoleum deserves some super special
recognition for making theses awesome, informative, and very enlightening
videos?
omg finaly some one that plays the high hat how it should be
Great video! I love the fill in TSRTS in the end where Bonham speeds up the
two 16th note snare rolls; I’m terrible at trying to explain things I know
but its the fill right after all of the singing but before Plant says, ”
and shes buying a stairway to heaven.” Btw I meant to ask you, in your
“death video” the title wouldn’t happen to have been In My Time of Dying by
sheer accident would it? lol
Thank God! I was worried there for a minute..
Thanks for the nice words-Happy Holidays!!
….this is such a great channel, not just informative but your personality
makes the lessons even more enjoyable. You make me break out the old 2002
every time I watch one of your vids. So glad I found your channel. Happy
Holidays!
I hear Bonham playing either triplets or doubles on the hi hat throughout
the song, anybody else notice that?
What brand and size sticks do you use? You should do a video on the kind of
sticks Bonham used. “NO” body has a video like that out like that, or
nobody seems to know. Peace
YES! That part!
Thanks! I haven’t done a Bonzo’s Montreux yet-I suppose I should!
Thank you for explaining the fill from TSRTS, cuz that always threw me off
when trying to play it lol
Thanks for this lesson!! I’ve been playing the drums for less than two
years and I have to play this song in a couple of weeks, so this video is
really helpful! (Anyway, I’ll play a much simpler version) Greetings from
Argentina 🙂
deep breath…and relax
I’ve got it! Drumming Nirvana achieved!!! Downloaded your vid with KeepVid,
played it in VLC slowed down some, and then practised it for 5 mins.
Awesome!
Young’ns! Keep in mind we are analyzing a drummer’s technique that died at
32! It amazes me every time I think of that! BONZO!
Great Stuff bro…Thanks!
Yes- the “It makes me wonder”part..
Ouch!
