Freight train is the best way to describe the drive in this song. thanks
for the vid. This intro has forced me to work on 1/8 and 1/16 notes with
my left hand. I think it has greatly improved my over all drumming. I’m
still a hack but really enjoy playing. Thanks again Stephen!

Well done. I agree with you completely – the ghost notes through the whole
song make all the difference. You’ve really got the feel down on this. And
like you, I still can’t hear the right time on the intro when I hear it
without the count!
Yeah man. Thats it! I saw Dave Grohl play it with Jones, and Page, and
FUDGED the whole tune. The tune itself is a great exercise. If your left
hand is weak, it can’t be played correctly. Before Grohl (or however ya
spell it) did it, je said he would give one of his nuts to play with them.
I found that to be disrespectful to Bonham, especially when there are
people zaying he’s the best in the worl lol.
Anyway, favorite Zep tune…thats a tough one. I have to pick 2. No Quater
Live from the Song Remains the same, and Good Times. He was what 18 or 19
when he wrote that groove? People say they heard that triplet skip in other
tunes, but i could imagine what drummers were thinking the first time they
heard that.
Thanks for sharing this. It took me years to learn the secret and you
described perfectly here. I would love to see you do a similar video on the
first drum fill in Rush’s YYZ where the bass and drums trade 4s.
this intro to this tune is accents to “Johnny B Goode” solo
Good breakdown but as for the ghost notes neccessary or a must most
people,musicians or just listeners would not really care or notice them not
there. To me that song is more about feel than exact technical precision.

Your left hand is God.
In addition to the ghost notes on the snare, the bass drum is very
important in this groove as well. On the studio version, he’s definitely
NOT playing single quarter notes as demonstrated here. He’s playing mostly
8th notes…
Kashmir is one of the most epic sounding songs EVER…of any genre. The
accompanying symphony is unparalleled. When I started teching myself to
play at 7yrs old I would love to play (really, any) of their tunes, but the
phase on Bonzo’s drums would make me giddy. Totally tripped me out…I was
pretty sure it was magic…or witchcraft.
Impossible to pick a favorite but my favorite to drum is dazed and
confused. That was one of their first songs I learned . It inspired me to
learn when he came those triple six strokes (or whatever, you know the
fills im referring to) that you dont see coming and the monster triplets at
the end if the middle part
“Hey, Hey, What Can I Do”. I can’t believe its just the B side of “The
Immigrant Song”!
No Quarter I guess, It’s hard to choose just one! This is a fun song but I
haven’t played it since High school. These are great tips.

yep, and it’s funny how nearly everyone (and i include Jason bonham here)
don’t or more likely simply can’t ghost note that snare with their left
hand..i’d go so far as to say if you can’t do it you’ve no business playing
this song, because it sounds rubbish played straight!! and i can name a lot
of so called famous players who struggle with this one..a great lesson

Dude, you remind me of Randy Cooke! Such a relief to see an intelligent
drummer that can ACTUALLY COUNT, rather than “Play It By Ear”. Well done ,
my man! I love to do Zeppelin Karaoke, but so much of it is trashed by the
simple fact the timing is all done incorrectly! Anyone that says Zeppelin
were just stoned rockers and weren’t “musicians” , are TONE DEAF! Keep on
rockin them skins!
My favorite led zep tunes are Good Times Bad Times and Fool in the Rain. I
absolutely love the shuffle in fool in the rain.
