The fourth album by the English rock band Led Zeppelin was released on 8 November 1971. No title is printed on the album, so it is generally referred to as Led Zeppelin IV, following the naming standard used by the band’s first three studio albums. The album has alternatively been referred to as Four Symbols, The Fourth Album (those two titles each having been used in the Atlantic catalogue), Untitled, The Runes, The Hermit, and ZoSo, the latter of which is derived from the symbol used by Jimmy Page for the album sleeve. ZoSo has subsequently been used as moniker for Jimmy Page.

Upon its release, Led Zeppelin IV was a commercial and critical success. The album is one of the best-selling albums worldwide at 32 million units. It has shipped over 23 million units in the United States alone, making it the third-best-selling album ever in the US. In 2003, the album was ranked 66th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time”.

Line-Up:

Jimmy Page — acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, production, mastering, digital remastering
John Bonham — drums
John Paul Jones — synthesizer, bass guitar, keyboards, mandolin, recorders
Robert Plant — lead vocals, harmonica

Additional Musicians:

ShaniqaPikes says:

John Bonham is probably the greatest drummer who played in his genre. If
he isn’t, he’s certainly got the greatest greatness to ego ratio of anyone
who lived in the 20th century. The drum sound on this song is fluid, like
you can’t believe it’s individual percussion notes, a sound you can’t just
get hitting the drumheads. I want to compare it to Jimi Hendrix on guitar,
but I am not that good with words. Then the ego bit. Listen to Stairway
to Heaven. Bonhaam holds back until when? Half the song is over before
you hear a single percussion note. How many great artists would sit for
that long silent in order to make something great? Just awesomeness.

Just found out this is a remake of a song so old…I don’t think there is
anyone left who heard it back in the ’20’s. If there is … they probably
don’t remember it. Amazing how some very old songs are remade and still
appreciated. Way to go Zep. Truly a great song.

Ben Jackson says:

Just recently discovered Led Zeppelin and Rolling Stones. Amazing. The only
band that semi compares is the black keys

which was better! Ah the joys of youth. Still one of my absolute faves; One
of the top 20 LPs of all time, methinks…

DC Magagni says:

I was once told Jimmy actually surrounded the mike on the kick drum with

Not sure if it was true or not but it sounds plausible

clintfalk says:

Recorded at Headley Grange, using the Rolling Stones Mobile Studio. Bonham
had set up a new drum kit in the great hall, called the “Minstrel’s
Gallery”. Described as three stories high and like a cathedral. Bonham
started playing. Jimmy heard it, and had Bonham play the drum part to this
tune, and knew what they had to do. The recording crew dropped a pair of
mikes from the staircase over Bonham’s kit. Engineer Andy Johns recorded
the drum tracks on two channels through Page’s vintage Binson reverb unit.
The rest is history. The most sampled drum riff of all time, ‘cos nothing
digital can create a sound like that.
