Led Zeppelin’s infamous return to the stage in Philadelphia’s JFK Staduim in July 1985 to support Bob Geldof’s international “Live Aid” event to bring relief to the Ethiopian famine. Introduced by Phil Collins, the band takes to the stage with Tony Thompson on drums & Collins tagging along.

This clip has been cleaned up: the green hues from the 20 yr old + tape has been removed, the brightness & contrast have been balanced out.
The audio has been synchronized to the FM broadcast captured on an old cassette tape. That audio was pretty messed up & had lots of dropouts, hopefully the results are satisfactory. The original audio is heard at the beginning of this clip, the enhanced stereo sound starts around :30 sec into the clip.

Enjoy!!

For best results, watch in HQ with headphones.

Had Enough says:

Both drummers sucked. Phil and Tony had no business doing these tunes. How
the hell do you call yourself a professional rock drummer and NOT know
these tunes? They didn’t know when to stop, when to accent,
etc..horrible…Phil had the nerve to smile through out the whole
trainwreck…

gahloot says:

How does anyone blame Collins when you consider he was never in Zeppelin?
Page, and Plant sucked ass, and they had plenty of time to find drummer’s
if they had wanted to! Phil is a great drummer, just didn’t know the
material well enough, and they were all jacked up on Lord knows what on
stage? Hell Page, doesn’t even look like he know’s where he is at?

Like the Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show (Which did sound better than this)
People still need to look at certain moments in music history, in their
proper contexts. To most of us in 1985 we didn’t give two shits what
Zeppelin sounded like at Live Aid when it was happening. It was about the
good cause and the reunion of the surviving members. They hadn’t been
together in 6 years or been seen live on film or tv by the masses since the
76 film The Song Remains the Same. In 1985, 9 and 6 years, musically was a
lot longer than it is today. Mtv had been huge for a few years at that
point and Zeppelin seemed like they were from WAY back in the day, due to
not having old videos to show, or any new ones because they weren’t
together anymore. There was no YouTube of course that allowed you to keep
images fresh in your mind. You had old vinyl album covers to look at and
old magazines. Even the Beatles got rotation on Mtv some with old clips
from their movies and the Stones were making fresh stuff and having vids
from the late 70s and early 80s being shown. It felt like forever since we
had even seen Zeppelin Also, In those days Stairway was not as overplayed
on radio, but played enough on it and in bedrooms that it was classic. It’s
clear that Page is doped up here and Plant hasn’t practiced his heavy
singing in a while and yes Collins didn’t really seem to know the songs.
But I’m telling you, I watched this live when I was 15 and it was a huge
moment and everyone talked about it the next day. No one was ragging on
them. Plus in those days, not long after this, people actually thought the
Bowie/Jagger video of Dancing in the Streets was cool, lol. Crazy but true.

Polyphonic Press says:

I’ve heard about how awful this performance is but this is the first time
I’ve been able to see it. This is far from Led Zeppelin’s best performance,
but it’s definitely not as bad as I was expecting.

El Cuento says:

John Paul Jones wins man of the match for this performance, flawless as
usual and held the train wreck together. Phil tried hard and I thought was
passable given the circumstances. Plant was out of shape. Page was horrible
– he sounds like a 10 year old practicing electric guitar and his new toy
phaser pedal in his bedroom.

sal economos says:

In 1985, we ZEP fans, would have crawled over broken glass to hear a ZEP
reunion of any kind.
This was as close as we could get.
And it was good enough for us.

Ron Bradford says:

Tony Thompson obviously knew the songs at least better than Phil Collins
who looked lost the whole time

nonrepublicrat says:

collins is an ugly little rodent with no talent at all.

harryurz says:

Bearing in mind Phil Collins had performed at Wembley the same day then
caught Concorde to fly to the USA for this performance in Philly with no
rehearsal and jet-lagged he did quite well!! As for Robert, ….well.

spareaxe says:

Jimmy stated this was an awful set to play since they waited like 4 hours
and only had a half hour to rehearse. The drummers including Collins didn’t
know the material and it was just not working for him or Robert.

nonrepublicrat says:

plant -sucked
page- also sucked
collins- what a pathetic joke!
jpj- excellent as always

Jez Creed says:

I’m not sure all the blame should fall on Collins. It was a joint effort!
What the hell was all that phaser doing on Page’s guitar?!

vomitedshit says:

well, robert looks quite sharp

williamgalmeida says:

I just love how nobody is complaining about JPJ XD he’s the only good thing
about this performance tbh

Chris Cope says:

The fact two drummers couldn’t replicate how good bonzo was just cements
his place as the greatest drummer ever

Electric Warrior says:

‘Live Aid was absolutely appalling …’Ive seen the footage of and theres
this point where, I can see on my face theres a “oh my God”, this is it,
like the death knell, you can hear it ringing, you know …’

Robert Brennan says:

The phaser on Jimi’s guitar was a mistake. The cacophony of noise made his
guitar playing pointless.Plant’s voice and overall performance was
unprofessional. The drums were just a mess. Every band has a had a bad show
but for a global event of this magnitude for any other band this would have
been career suicide.

Jorge Galeano says:

what a mess, I love Robert Plant but this was awful.

Butt-Head says:

2 drummers couldnt even match Bonham’s skills 😀

Stephen Mann says:

Absolute rubbish. Worst Page / Plant performance ever.

kjek1 says:

As a huge lifelong Zep fan some of my fellow fans are an embarrassment.
What’s the point of trying to lay all the blame on Collins when Plant and
Jimmy (Jimmy in particular) flat out sucked too?

Ed Gorski says:

Don’t see where this is Phil’s fault.

And for those that say Phil isn’t s great drummer, I’d suggest you listen
to some 70s Genesis, especially live. Him by himself and his duets with
Chester Thompson are awesome (see: the Apocalypse in 9/8 section of
Supper’s Ready from Seconds Out)

Nostaticatall Nostatic says:

Wow, I had forgotten how bad this was. Phil Collins didn’t butcher this as
badly as people say though especially since he just sat in at the last
moment. Robert and Jimmy are probably the worst part of this performance
and their Atlantic 40th wasn’t a whole lot better. I thought John Paul
Jones was spot on though. Page and Plant did do some great shows in ’94
which you can see on here but without JPJ…. WTF? What a missed
opportunity.

Norm. Panganiban says:

I guess robert plants skinny jeans is straining his voice lol

The blame for this entire debacle falls squarely on Page and Plant.

No credit to Tony Thompson ? He was ten times the drummer Phil collins is

Tomas D. says:

John Paul Jones is the only one not messing up.

thangamajig says:

Bad mouth it all you want… Each performance, especially quickly thrown
together situations , only adds to the aura of such rock gods. And they
didn’t have their Bonham.

james Bjammin says:

page should have reloaded his morphine pump…
plant should have warmed up his voice before…
phil collins took the blame for this mess!

Oli Dart says:

only thing that annoys me about this is there’s way too much phase on
jimmy’s guitar

Jeffery Young says:

Plant sounds like he should have warmed up for about a week first…

terrypussypower says:

Only one drummer should have played, two is a recipe for chaos without the
proper rehearsals. But they were all “off” to a certain extent…except
John Paul Jones, of course! You could rely on him to keep it together in
the middle of a bloody war zone!

Antonio Cespedes says:

Desde luego, no fué el mejor día de Robert Plant..

Brian B says:

I think Phil did AWESOME!

Muz Berwick says:

Well, I made it to 3:47……enough is enough.

Eric Aikin says:

man, I LOVE Zeppelin, but this just makes me cringe. Also, 80’s Robert
Plant. hahaha

thegorn68 says:

Phil Collins looked like he wasn’t even in Tony Thompson’s league as a
drummer.

ckom0007 says:

And these idiots tried to blame Phil Collins for being the crappiest
act at Live Aid!

Stephen Arbain says:

The only time I’d ever seen Led Zeppelin live. I was 12 years old. And yes,
I loved it. though, I also loved Black Sabbath.

LinkBulletBill says:

dude that phaser pedal was strong against Jimmy. Did he even know it was
on? Throughout the whole set the phaser was on.

Itamar Lima says:

It’s been a long time since I rock and rolled,
It’s been a long time since I did the Stroll.
Ooh, let me get it back, let me get it back, let me get it back,
Baby, where I come from.
It’s been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time. Yes it has.

It’s been a long time since the book of love,
I can’t count the tears of a life with no love.
Carry me back, carry me back,
Carry me back, baby, where I come from.
It’s been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time.

Seems so long since we walked in the moonlight,
Making vows that just can’t work right.
Open your arms, opens your arms,
Open your arms, baby, let my love come running in.
It’s been a long time, been a long time,
Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time.
