DRUM LESSON * FOOL IN THE RAIN Led Zeppelin
This is a comprehensive video lesson on how to quickly and effectively learn Led Zeppelin's FOOL IN THE RAIN drum groove as played by JOHN BONHAM from 1979's In Through The Out Door. We break it down to its components, and then build it back up!

thank you so much for helping to understand Bonham easier for me… you are
the best! (not just for this video, all of them are so helpfull for me) and
because of you; now I’m practising “Fool in the rain” 3.30 in the morning
:)
thank you for the very clear and simple explanation to this beat. been
trying to figure it out for years. after your video i nailed it in about 45
mins. thank you!
Jesus i like watching (over and over again) this video. I don’t know if
i’ll ever be able to play it but it’s surely fun to understand just what’s
going on with the drums in this iconic song. I should go visit and shoot a
video with you one of these days. Never travelled i my life but i would
love to see Chicago :-)
I woke up today and watched the Fool in the Rain drum track and thought to
myself… jeez, I’ll never be able to play that. Then, I stumbled upon this
video, and I was playing the main pattern tightly within 30 minutes. I
can’t thank you enough. You’ve made my weekend! You broke that pattern down
beautifully. Great work.
looks like the dude from alot of movies. The squeaky voiced guy in “i love
you Man” the dude in role models who played a goofy knight who stabs the
little black kid in gene simons makeup.
Great stuff to see broken down – thank you. I’m a long time guitar player
that should have been a drummer, but everything worked out for me in the
end ;). That being said, in spite of how cool this is, Zeppelin never
played this song live. It just goes to show how clueless rock drummers
are. If I were a drummer, I’d be playing things like this or The Crunge!
i wonder if drummers are more susceptible than most to being seduced by
jazz. i’m a guitarist originally but i’ve been playing drums lately and
near the end of your very excellent presentation i felt you were expressing
a love for the grace notes and rhythmic freedom of jazz.
Nice! Makes me glad to be a guitar player. I could’nt make my limbs do so
many different things at once. I love this shuffle and the “Porcaro
shuffle”. You seem like you’d be a blast to jam with.
The bass drum part seems different when you play everything together versus
when you play just the bass drum part. Are you throwing in a double at the
beginning of each bass drum hit?
man I have always been confused by this beat and watched vid after vid, and
still could not get it. Then i watched your vid got it thanks for making it
easy. I will be watching more of your stuff. Thanks
can you go over the drum fills in a little more detail? specifically, the
one he plays as the lyrics start at “well there’s a light in your eye that
keeps shining…” and then the ones he plays coming out of the
snare/bass/hihat only part that you played around 11:15
My fav! I mastered the Bonzo shuffle by playing this song over and over and
over. You’re explanation is spot on! I’ve tried to explain the Ghost/grace
notes to others and you made it sound so easy. It’s hard for folks to grasp
grace notes if they have never tried them. 🙂
You give great instruction man.
I always enjoy your videos because you take your time showing us Bonham
fans how to master an awesome shuffle or groove. Keep on rockin !!!!!

Dude you’re cool as shit. Awesome way to break it down!! Never thought of
it that way.
Its not 1 and-a it’s 1-la-Li. It’s triplets
It’s like a Hemingway novel; lots of simple things coming together to
create a great complexity.
Like watching this breakdown. Dude is just a goof-ball!
I like this guy. His lessons are really easy & simple to pick up.
Uncomplicated. Great Drummer too !
This guy is so cool, make a great teacher
Like this guy a lot. Great teacher and funny!
Man, you’re a genius!

Ghost Notes 😀
Don’t have enough Jews left in the camera?
I’ve learned more watching this video than all of my music classes
combined. Thank you sir.
Thank you so much. I had to transcribe it first but what you said was just
enough for it.
Great lesson awesome dude!
My son wants to play this for the talent show but I can’t find the drumless
track. Any ideas?
Needs more beard!
