MORNING CALL BLOG: LEHIGH VALLEY MUSIC: Posted by John J. Moser at 01:28:00 AM on January 13, 2013
In 2009, TV and radio producer Denny Somach saw the value in a program that disc jockey Carol Miller was doing on New York’s classic rock radio station WAXQ-FM, 104.3. She was playing the music of iconic rock band Led Zeppelin interspersed with trivia and tidbits of information.
So Somach helped syndicate “Get the Led Out” nationally, writing and producing it and offering more than 5,000 hours of interviews he conducted and audio content he collected about the band since early in his career at Allentown rock radio station WSAN-AM 1470.
About two years ago, Somach says he realized that even using a minute or two of his material in each show meant the public still never would be exposed to the bulk of it. So Somach, an Allentown native, decided to put together a book.
That story is told in “Get The Led Out: How Led Zeppelin Became the Biggest Band in the World,” (Sterling; $29.95, 256 pp.). The detailed coffee-table tome includes 26 interviews, including interviews with all four members of Led Zeppelin.
Denny SomachThe book, released Nov. 6, couldn’t have come at a better time, with Led Zeppelin’s profile at its highest in years. There was the Oct. 17 limited theatrical release of “Celebration Day,” the documentary film of the 2007 concert at London’s 02 stadium that reunited Led Zeppelin’s surviving members — singer Robert Plant, Page and bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones — for the first full concert in 27 years, after they disbanded in the wake of drummer John Bonham’s death after a day of binge drinking.
On Dec. 2, Led Zeppelin was among those lauded at the 35th annual Kennedy Center Honors, with the ceremony broadcast on national television Dec. 26.
In a recent telephone interview, Somach discussed the book, Led Zeppelin’s career, and his long fascination with the band.
Here is a transcript of the call: FULL STORY OPEN LINK BELOW

John Paul Jones has often made light of the fact that Page and Plant reunited in the mid-’90s for two albums and a world tour without him. He recalled that despite being partners with the pair in LED ZEPPELIN — he found out about their team-up through a third party. “I was kind of disappointed that I found out about. . . I read about it in the newspapers,” he said. “I called up somebody who works with all of us at the time and said, ‘I see the rumors are getting strong again,’ because there’s always rumors about reunions and stuff. And they said, ‘Oh didn’t they tell you?’ And I went, ‘Well, tell me what?’ And he said, ‘Well, they’re getting back on the road again.’ ‘Oh, well, OK, (laughs) whatever.'”
Pretty cool that Plant took the farthest seat.. true humility. Knight
these guys Liz!
I got goose bumps from their music, from Robert Plant’s voice when I was
only 16 years old. Which was in 1974. How lucky I feel now that I could
experience that effect…
Sorry to put it this way, but John Bonham, why did you have to fucking die
leaving world without your amazing-ness, you fucker
BEST BAND EVER!
shit, i born on wrong decade and wrong place. their songs gives me
goosebumps. your old but awesome songs are and will always rock this world.
That was very respectful that Robert took the furthest seat away. class
Dave should have prepared better for this interview. The “drummer died”
comment was really cringe-worthy. At least make a note of his name he is
one of the most respected drummers of all time and obviously their friend.
God i still love them! I met them at the Forum when i was 19 years old
backstage and was in awe!
Really like the basics,Jimmy kept referring to Jeff in the
beginning…..Yardbird’s rule.
Love Zep! Way back when I decided these guys will always be my favorite
band. Happy and sad,,, 40 years later… they still are. Wish I could
shake their hands… but I don’t have a popular late night talk show :)
Zeppelin’ Page, Plant, Jones on David Letterman (…:

Letterman, sorry bud, you choked on a big one during this interview. You
and your corporate ways blundered in the face of these absolute rock gods!
Sorry to put it this way, but John Bonham, why did you have to fucking die
leaving world without your amazing-ness, you fucker
John Bonham will be remembered for ever Letterman will fade from the memory
soon after his run has ended, he should have called it quits here.
I can’t believe David Letterman has lasted on television at all. He
completely destroyed this interview.
I don’t know what it is, but there is something so special about Led
Zeppelin that goes beyond the music. Maybe because their music stood the
test of time when they were so snubbed by everyone when they were
performing. They were on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine ONE TIME from
1968 to 1980…what the hell was that???
I really feel bad for John :< He's always kinda sad because most people ignore him and forget about him, but he was part of Zeppelins too =/
letterman’s an IDIOT……..
20,000,000 ticket requests? The debate is over. Best Rock band in the
history of the world.
I’d rather seen Fallon interview these guys, Letterman is a has-been.
“The drummer dies” LOL fuck you david.
Led Zeppelin,no question, one of the best Rock and Roll Bands of the past
millennium,their music was,Extraordinary good!
Dave the douche. Way to ruin an incredible interview op, Dave.
Letterman is rather clueless but I love watching this just for the sheer
joy of seeing Robert, Jimmy, and Jonesy together again. Thank you so much
for uploading this! What a treat! Just love these guys. John Paul is
hilarious!
Robert actually sounded good at the end.
John Paul is a comedian. Who knew?
still by far the best rock and roll band in the world….. no others even
come close
JPJ…King of Comedy!
Letterman is such a lousy interviewer. :(
“The Drummer Dies” Really Dave? C’mon man. That’s like saying to the Doors
“Your singer died”.
Letterman never seems prepared for interviews. He could barely remember
each of their names and he didn’t seem like he knew much of anything about
them and the interview actually sounded like one that would have been done
when the band had just formed. Just pathetic that the guy gets paid that
much money to be a total idiot.
20 million requests for tickets, that was just from people willing to
travel to london
if they went on tour theyed filled every stadium in the world, maybe twice.
thats alot of bread folks.
if they dont get at it sone, jason bomhams going to be to old
Dear Moonlight. I’m not asking you not to mourn just pointing out where the
years will land us as they go by. Heck, I’m the one mourning. So many of my
music “gods” are gone now. Hendrix (not to mention the rest of “The
experience”, M.Mitchell, N.Redding), J. Joplin,
J. Morrison,T.Bolder,M.Ronson, the list goes on and on. Hope all is well on
your end.
Haha, JPJ’s so funny!
“Led Zeppelin For God Sakes” lol Letterman
It’s a pitty I don’t get half of the things they’re saying. Subtitles don’t
help a lot :/ I really need to improve my english…well. Glad to see them
together after all the years. I’ve read in a newspaper that Robert and
Jimmy are pissed off with each other. Robert told Jimmy to get over and
make his own music. I know their relationship hasn’t been the best during
these last years, but come on, it’s sad seeing a wonderful couple of
partners, masters of music, ending up like that!
Dave is just clueless here.
letterman should have asked about the plagiarism
i wish jimmy Paige would have said David who …
Good to see them all STILL together, STILL friends and looking well.
Considering the stories told about their exploits on the road, they have
aged well and STILL kick butt!!! I had no idea John Paul Jones was
soooooooooo funny; he was a hoot!!!
Zeppelin love it!!
How could they not do a song ?? What a Travesty ….
OMG..Letterman seams so big..
Excellent!!!!
It’s so painful to see what handsome young Robert has turned into…
who are those other bands?
I know a person that met Robert not many years ago and said he was very
congenial, a total gentleman and very warm and unassuming. I believe it. He
just strikes me that way.
This is why i dont watch David Letterman…he’s an idiot…
