In this guitar lesson wee look at Led Zepplin’s, Black Dog guitar riff. I love this riff but I really struggled with the syncopated bit when I was learning it as a teenager, so I have included that section as well as the main riff in this guitar lessons. It’s super cool but you will probably want to practice it at a slower speed to get it right – see the transcribing area of my web site for more info on that and the Transcribe! program.
Yes it sounds like JP played it on a Les Paul, but I’m just loving my Tele so much at the moment I can’t keep my hands off her 🙂

Not an easy song to play…. but playing the guitar part really isn’t THAT
difficult (admittedly, I am an advanced guitarist)
But GOOD LUCK finding a full band to play this puppy LIVE with you.
The timing is SO skewed in the studio recording…..
ATTEMPTED to play it live ONCE…. failed
ReReReRehearsed it again and again.
ATTEMPTED to play it live again….. failed.
Never again 😉
Nice chops…. actually looped the original track and added in the harmony
guitar track…
Again…. partitioned, my band had it down note for note.
but the actual studio recorded progression is almost impossible to
duplicate, properly, in a live setting.
YES! Jimmy! I love your vids, and have been going down the list, and I was
starting to wonder if you hated Zeppelin. So happy to see this. Awesome
job.
what effects did you use? just a minimal amount of drive?
hi all, what is the amp setting for this tone? i am struggling to get this
tone, please help
on the A chord it’s a bend up on the G note of the low E string instead of
a standard A
Nailed that beauty Justin. Nice one Mush.
one of the best riffs everrr!!!
whats the exact model of this tele?
How is your amp equalized?
Justin I have been watching you for years, thanks for all your free lessons
they have helped me become a better guitarist but something happened in my
neck and I got a pinched nerve and lost the feeling in my left hand and now
I can’t play the guitar anymore, I lost the feeling in my index middle and
thumb, it has been a month now since this happened, have you heard of this
before and is there any exercise I can do to get the feeling back in my
fingers and thumb?
@Nicky282820 dude..the alternate picking (both directions) will multiply ur
playing speed X2 .. true that it’s hard at the beginning; but will make
your hand pick more comfortably and easy in the future ….I’m like u..I’ve
been practicing for months only, believe it or not..I learned this riff
without the pick(hand picking)..when I learned it with the pick, at first I
struggled but then ,, it was super cool..the sound was so much better !
I’ve been waiting for this lick for so long !! My favorite band, great
song, great lesson! Thanks!
too fast 🙁
@JustinSandercoeSongs Hey Justin. I think the end part of the main riff may
be slightly incomplete. I’ve listened to it a few times and I’m pretty sure
the last bit on the D string is 5-7-7-0-2 flick on to 0, 3rd fret on A
string then 5 flick off 3, 0 (all on A string) then play the A power chord.
Can you confirm? I’m not totally sure about the bit on the A string. Thanks
again for the lesson 😀
@Parkyy16 dude Zeppelin 1 and most of 2 were done on a tele… and alot of
his other studio work was done with one, including the stairway solo.
I think you got one “but” too much in your description there mate. Not my
native language though, so I’m not exactly sure. Cheers, great riff.
At the end he says ”syncopated”. Is that something to do with starting on
the ‘&’ beat?
Thank you Justin for teaching me, I made my own video check it

lol man i love your videos…. I’ve learned a whole lot from them… You

solo??? Cant get it exactly right yet…. If you could just message me back
either way, I’d appreciate it. Thanks and you rock!!
well justin , u got me back playin my 6 and 12 acoustic after my bad wreck
crushing my left wrist and tearin thumb tendon. so my index finger and
thumb tendon r attched now (no thumbover base 4 me) wreck in 04 been back
playin abt 3 months. as I can see, u will b gettin me goin on my peavey
raptor #1 electric as well. thank you justin 4 giving me back part of my
life
Thank you so much Justin, I will definitely be donating when I can.
Possibly a stupid question, but I’ve only been learning for a couple of
months, why does the direction of picking matter? Is it to help with
timing? or is there actually a sound difference? Thanks again 🙂
thank you!!!! can you please do ”whole lotta love”?…[the whole song]
whackin that string from both sides… brootal
Justin , please send me an E mail @ jerry_willingham@ yahoo.com. i need to

telecaster. love fender sound
You’re so good!
justin is my new God
does how you pick really matter??
very well, man!!!! Nice!!! Thank you!!!!!
I HAVE THAT GUITAR!
dude plz do dazed and confused cant find any decent tabs
@DrGreenfun Picking is very important to guitarist if not a fundamental and
should know. As for alternative picking, down pick should go with downbeat
as a up pick should go with the upbeat. Very important.
@Marseille5 JPJ
great i love it, i am forming a band for my girls 40th and this is on the
list! being a violin player, not a natural guitarist, this really helps,
thanks a lot!
there seems like there should be another pickon/ pull off towards the end
of the main riff
AWESOME! I was waiting for this one to come :p thanks a lot dude! great
tuts, as usual
ive learned this song but playing it with the album is another task …
