John Henry Bonham, possibly the greatest drummer who ever lived, the
quinessential 1970s man, that’s what real men used to be like kids.

Ooooooh yeah, love the sound of those Vista-lites! Been playing for almost
35 years and have yet to acquire a set. Those are my dream drums! I watch
this and think: Damn, if only he hadn’t drank so damn much! Same with Keith
Moon. You see the interviews and Bonzo seemed like a really sweet guy, just
had no control. Damn shame. I was too young to have seen Zep…another damn
shame. Bollocks! Oh well, long live rock, cheers!

FUCKING BEAST

Bicho Maledetto says:

Come on, he’s not the best drummer unless you know very little about music.
Bonham was great, but not the greatest. He’s nowhere near Dennis Chambers,
Dave Weckl, Tony Royster or Vinnie Colaiuta.

juan cisterne says:

I never seen Jason’s solo, so let’s check it out above.

Piergiorgio “p” Fiandanese says:

*John Henry* “*Bonzo*” “*The Beast*” *Bonham* (31 May 1948, Redditch,
Worcestershire, England – 25 September 1980, Clewer, Windsor, England) was
a musician, songwriter, and the drummer of Led Zeppelin.

He was renowned for his power, fast right foot, distinctive sound and
“feel” for the groove, and for his drum solos such as in “Moby Dick”. He is
the perfect model for all Hard Rock drummers that have followed him. His
contributions to Rock Music were revolutionary, and his talent unmatched
and irreplaceable. Rolling Stone readers named him the “best drummer of all
time” in 2011.

“Moby Dick”, named after the whale in the 1851 novel *Moby-Dick* by Herman
Melville, is Bonzo’s drum solo performance showcase. The tune, first
entitled “Pat’s Delight” as a dedication to his wife, Pat Bonham Phillips,
is opened and closed by a short Blues riff by Zeppelin’s guitarist Jimmy
Page and bassist John Paul Jones. The drum solo on concert tours would
often last for 30 minutes, while the rest of the band would leave the stage
after having played the introduction. During the performance Bonham would
often set aside or throw his drumsticks into the audience, and then
continue the solo with his bare hands to achieve different sound effects.
Later it became known as “Over The Top” when the solo began with the
opening riff to “Out On The Tiles”, a track from their 1970 album *Led
Zeppelin III*.

I would rather see the drum performance instead of the drag race video. I
mean the drum solo was the best ever. I’m comfortable saying that there has
never been a superior performance of percussion.

xFuddyDuddy says:

It’s a little repetitive for my taste, but I keep forgetting this is hard
rock, not prog rock.

lynsuefa says:

I think the most unique quality that no other possesses is to change
direction on a dime from 100 mph to 0 and anything in between with no
effort at all. It is truly amazing. He is a freak of nature and one of a
kind never to be duplicated again.

Paweł Morrison says:

Type in Led Zeppelin – Moby dick full version 19:29 in youtube. I guess
it`s from 1972ish cause it hasn’t got the timpani parts. It`s the best
Bonham solo I`ve head so far. But this one is also one of my favourites!

AragornStarscream81 says:

Don’t go putting labels like “The Best Drummer Ever!” on drummers; that
just is reason for people to get into a children’s fight over their
favorite drummer.

giulio caprari says:

the best drummer…

Paweł Morrison says:

The studio version was put together from pieces. John was just sitting in
the room playing probably like 15 minutes and Jimmy just cut it and put
together again. I strongly suggest you to go and see “Pat`s delight” which
is an early version of moby dick from 1968-1969. Theres a video on youtube
with a yellow image. All I can say about it is “FUCKING BEAST” 🙂

Glenn Quagmire says:

Get the original soundtrack from 1976 to hear a quicker and more creative
version of Moby Dick. Check your local used CD store. Red text on the
spine. Best picks from the 1973 Madison gig, some far better than the 2007
reissue. Hear it here: watch?v=1h2CIMMMKBk
